Taiwan in 100 Books, John Grant Ross (Camphor Press, June 2020)

Taiwan in 100 Books is an accessible introduction to the history and culture of Taiwan through one hundred English-language books.

John Ross, a long-time resident of Taiwan and the author of Formosan Odyssey, takes a chronological approach, covering books about the 1600s up to the present. The majority of titles are non-fiction works. Books included are the most influential such as Formosa Betrayed and Green Island, as well as some forgotten gems like Green Plums and a Bamboo Horse. Rather than a book-by-book summary or a collection of reviews, the titles are woven into thematic narratives which are peppered with backstories about the books and authors. There are tales of outrageous literary fraud, lost manuscripts, banned books, and publishing skullduggery.
