Opera in brief: recent happenings at the Guangzhou Opera House

The holiday week that starts October in China saw both “Immersive Comic Opera Week” and a recital of soprano Anna Netrebko at the Guangzhou Opera House. Netrebko sang a selection of songs from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, ably accompanied on the piano by Irina Soboleva.

Pomme d’Api, which had a sold-out run from 30 June to 2 July 2023, returned to the Guangzhou Opera stage for six performances starting 29 September. These were followed by two more performances of Rita, the hit opera that debuted in 2022. The performance on 5 October marked the 20th performance of this production.
